What causes the absolute path toward personal destruction? Is the path built, one bad decision at a time, or inherited?

My own course to self-destruction was when I realized I was free to create my life as I wanted it. No longer tied to other’s expectations, I didn’t know who to be or how to act or where to go.

It was alarming and uncomfortable.
